Mercedes E 220 d W213: fixing harsh shifts and P07B700 with a replacement TCM

Mercedes E 220 d W213: fixing harsh shifts and P07B700 with a replacement TCM

Symptom

Harsh shifts, P07B700 and unavailable working-pressure readings.

Confirmed cause

Checks and the repair outcome confirmed a fault in the original TCM board.

Repair

TCM board 725270901180 replaced; data transferred using ACDP II; oil pan and fluid replaced.

Result

Sensor readings returned; a road test confirmed smooth shifts without jerks.

A repair from our workshop experience

The vehicle was a 2018 Mercedes-Benz E 220 d 4MATIC Sedan, W213, with an OM654.920 diesel engine and 163,000 km on the odometer. It was equipped with a nine-speed 9G-Tronic 725.058 transmission.

The owner's complaint

The automatic transmission shifted harshly while driving. Diagnostics confirmed fault code P07B700.

Diagnostics

The diagnostic tool confirmed P07B700. We then checked the actual working-pressure parameters. No numerical reading could be obtained: the tool reported that the values were unavailable.

The transmission control module (TCM) board was removed together with the valve body. We connected the board to an ACDP II programmer and identified the module. The identification data showed Bosch number 1034420294.

Confirmed cause

The checks and the subsequent repair outcome confirmed a fault in the original TCM board. It was responsible for P07B700, harsh shifts and missing sensor readings. This repair required replacing the control board and transferring data from the original module.

Removal and data backup

We drained the transmission fluid, removed the oil pan and removed the valve body with its TCM board. The original board was connected to ACDP II for identification.

A full backup and EEPROM data were read before replacement. These data were used to program the new board.

Replacement TCM board

We used a new Mercedes-Benz electronic board, part number 725270901180. The data read from the original TCM were written to the replacement board.

Work carried out

  1. Drained the transmission fluid and removed the oil pan.
  2. Removed the valve body with the TCM board.
  3. Connected the original board to ACDP II.
  4. Identified the module.
  5. Read the full backup and EEPROM data.
  6. Wrote the data to the new TCM board.
  7. Fitted the new board to the valve body.
  8. Reinstalled the valve body in the vehicle.
  9. Installed a new oil pan and filled with new transmission fluid.
  10. Performed repeat diagnostics and a road test.

Parts replaced

  • Mercedes-Benz control board 725270901180.
  • Transmission oil pan.
  • Transmission fluid.

Time and warranty for this repair

This repair took one day. The new TCM board carried a one-year warranty in this particular case. These were the terms of the completed repair; terms for a new job are agreed separately. The source material does not state the price.

Result

After reassembly, the diagnostic tool could read the sensor values again. The road test confirmed smooth transmission operation without jerks or harsh shifts. Transmission operation was restored.

Agreeing a repair at TSG

The scope and price are determined after diagnostics and inspection of the affected components. A fault may have several possible solutions, using new genuine parts, new aftermarket parts or used parts. Each case is assessed individually: we check which solutions suit the vehicle, calculate their costs and offer suitable options. The work and choice of parts are agreed with the customer before the repair begins.
